Catching Our Eye
• Haitian Ohioans. WYSO’s Kathryn Mobley reports, “Many Haitian Ohioans face loss of work permits this week, after Supreme Court ruling on TPS.”
Last Thursday, the US Supreme Court ruled the Trump administration has the authority to retract Temporary Protected Status, TPS, from Haitian and Syrian immigrants.
The program is meant to help people from countries that have experienced violence, natural disasters, or other unsafe conditions. An estimated 12,000 to 15,000 Haitian immigrants live in Springfield alone, and many could now face deportation.
• Outdoor recreation. The Athens County Independent’s Dani Kington reports, “Governor vetoes outdoor rec funding cut.”
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine issued an eleventh-hour line-item veto on a house bill provision that would have stripped the Outdoor Recreation Council of Appalachia of $750,000 in state funding.
DeWine waited until last night to announce the veto. The funding cut would have automatically gone into effect hours later without his action.
• Cooling off. Spectrum News One’s Lydia Taylor reports, “Ohio cities open cooling centers amid heat wave this week.”
The brutal heat and humidity have arrived in the Buckeye State. Highs will reach 90-plus degrees, with many areas hitting triple-digit heat indices this week.
To help residents beat the heat, some Ohio cities have offered cooling centers. If your city isn’t listed, residents are advised to call the city or check 211 for any cooling centers.
