YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- In case you missed it, last night Minnesota Governor Tim Walz joined over 2800 fired-up Ohioans in Youngstown for the People’s Town Hall hosted by the Ohio Democratic Party. Ohioans showed Republicans loud and clear that they’re tired of Republican politicians driving up the cost of living while ripping away healthcare, education, and more.

Despite an invitation from Mahoning County Democratic Party Chair Chris Anderson, Rulli did not attend last night’s town hall. Instead, he called a town hall with constituents who want their voices to be heard a “pathetic spectacle.”

Ohioans are hurting, and while their ‘voice in Congress’ cowered in Washington, Governor Walz and Ohio Democrats showed up to show OH-6 residents that we see them,” said Ohio Democratic Party spokeswoman Katie Seewer. “It’s clear from the energy in Youngstown that Ohioans are fired up and ready for change. We’re grateful to Governor Walz for joining us, and are looking forward to another sold-out town hall in Lorain this evening.”

The Vindicator: Overflow crowd greets Walz

  • An overflow crowd loudly cheered as Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who unsuccessfully ran in 2024 for vice president, answered questions at a town hall in Youngstown — something Congressman Michael Rulli, the Salem Republican who represents the district — has failed to do so far.
  • The town hall at downtown Youngstown’s DeYor Performing Arts Center was the Monday showcase event of Walz’s visit to Ohio with about 3,000 people attending, which included about 600 in an overflow area.

  • The event, held at the DeYor Performing Arts Center, drew a large crowd of attendees eager to express frustration over the lack of public engagement from Congressman Mike Rulli, who represents Ohio’s 6th District.
  • Some attendees said the town hall felt like a rare opportunity to be heard. Dale Kennedy, a retiree from Warren, said rising costs are hitting seniors hard. “These prices aren’t coming down — not with Trump’s tariffs,” he said. “It’s nice to hear Democrats talk about what we can actually do.”
  • Monday’s event left many in Youngstown feeling heard — and Walz hopes it sparks ongoing dialogue in the months ahead.
