Columbus, Ohio- Today, the Ohio Senate voted in a concurrence vote to send Senate Bill 1 to Governor Mike DeWine, where he is likely to sign it into law. Instead of providing accessible and affordable education for as many Ohioans as possible, Republicans would rather attack the future of Ohio workers and students.
Senate Bill 1 bans faculty strikes, establishes post tenure reviews, and more. Instead of trusting our higher education professionals to do their jobs, the legislature would rather attack their ability to organize for a fair working environment.
This destructive legislation will lead current and future students, higher education professionals, and researchers to look elsewhere. The damage isn’t limited to current students either. Businesses will think twice about opening in Ohio, forcing graduates to move out of state for good-paying jobs. Republicans could spend their time addressing our state’s real issues, but instead they decided to damage our state’s future over unproven theories
“Today, Republicans showed us they’d rather gamble with our economic future than solve real problems in our state,” said Ohio Democratic Party Chair Elizabeth Walters. “Instead of growing our state, Republicans are driving students, young adults, and business away from Ohio. We’re urging Governor DeWine to do the right thing and veto this legislation”
