Columbus, Ohio- Today, the White House issued an executive order to eliminate the Department of Education. This reckless move will throw schools into chaos and hurt Ohio’s most vulnerable students. While billionaires play politics with our state’s future, our senators and Governor Mike DeWine are cheering them on
The Department of Education allocates funds to Title One schools, which have the highest numbers of low-income students. Ohio received $596 million in Title One funding in fiscal year 2023 and educated over 800,000 students with these funds. For Ohio’s low-income students, these funds help pave the path to a brighter future for themselves and our state as a whole. Their state’s elected officials would rather score points with Donald Trump than grow the next generation of Ohio’s leaders. Meanwhile, DeWine’s attendance reveals that his focus on helping Ohio’s children is only a priority when it’s politically convenient- otherwise it just becomes another empty promise
“Ohio’s students are our state’s future, but their elected officials are cheering as billionaires rip away their access to a quality education. Today reveals DeWine, Husted & Moreno’s complete disinterest in any future that isn’t focused on their extreme politics,” said Ohio Democratic Party spokeswoman Katie Seewer. “Our elected officials should be standing up for our students, but they can’t even stand up to Donald Trump.”
